before EVERYONE gets excited, there is a catch: you need to be a menopausal woman. Menopause causes estrogen levels to drop- causing memory loss, hot flashes, fatigue and loss of bone density to be among the side effects.

A study was done with 40 women going through menopause, none of whom were on hormone replacement therapy and none of the women had a history of osteoporosis. The women had their blood taken at the beginning of the trial, then asked to “refrain from consuming alcohol” for 2 weeks. At the end of the two weeks their blood was taken again- the results showed a decrease in bone density.

Immediately following the 2 week abstinence trial, researchers gave each woman a specific amount of alcohol drink. Again, their blood was tested. The results showed a decrease in bone turnover.

More research is needed, but talk to your doctor about the latest developments in research!
